Good, now that that’s said, let’s move on.
I have an obsession with carrots.
NOT THAT KIND OF OBSESSION SO GET YOUR MINDS OUT OF THE GUTTER.
I could eat carrots morning, noon and night if it weren’t for my friends who like to tell me horrific stories of friends and family who turned orange from eating too many. I eat a carrot after every meal or snack. Yes, even for brekkie. Why? They make me feel healthy. I eat them on the phone, much to everyone’s disgust by the number of times they say to me “are you eating a carrot again?!?!?!” If I finish a meal with a carrot or if I’ve eaten something particularly nasty (like a little bit of Cadbury Chocolate last night – ok, it was a lot, 6 pieces – erk), I’ll eat a carrot afterwards and feel incredibly, healthy and fabulous. It’s a bit like the chocolate splurge never happened. I can’t explain it but I think it mentally negates the naughty thing I’ve just eaten.
Unbeknown to me until half an hour ago, carrots have a lot of healing properties and according to the 15 websites I just researched for this post, they’re high in Vitamin A and anti-oxidants. Carrots have also shown to have anti-cancer effects which reduces free radicals in the body – take THAT you free radicals.
The excellent thing about my carrot obsession is that by leading by example and watching me pop to the fridge now and then to munch on a raw carrot, 3 out of my 5 kids now do the same (the other two are a completely lost cause on the healthy eating thing) so it’s also subconsciously sending a good message to little people in my life (takes a bow).
During the week, a PR agency sent me a pack of Organic Coconut water to try. As one of many who has recently purchased a juicer and jumped into the juicing craze, I was aware I needed coconut water for almost every juice recipe I’d read about but I’d not yet taken the plunge and bought any. I was keen to at least try and see what the hype was and if I needed to add copious amounts of green stuff to make it taste nicer. I tried it straight with nothing added. OMG – It’s got the same effect on me that carrots have. Seriously. I don’t know what’s in this stuff (ok, the ingredients state that it’s only 100% Organic Coconut water) but it’s amazing. It gives you energy, a buzz, a feeling of thirst quenching fullness without feeling like crap. With no sugar, no fat, electrolytes and gluten free, I do believe I’m converted (I would have been converted on the taste alone but the healthy bits are a bonus). The sales spiel is impressive but as someone who never believes hype until I’ve tried it, I can honestly recommend throwing a few of these in the fridge for a post workout bevvie, as sports drinks for the kids or for that “I need to drink something healthy” feeling after devouring a block of chocolate.
I’m now going to add carrot juice to the coconut water. That may just be my version of heaven!
